Executive Director, Proyecto Tití

Rosamira Guillen, executive director at Proyecto Tití (Colombia), works with rural communities to find mutually beneficial solutions that both support the local economy while also protecting Colombia’s biodiversity, including the critically endangered cotton-top tamarins and their forest home. Rosamira’s work includes a forest restoration and connectivity project that has helped bring together partner organizations and 150+ local landowners/farmers in 10+ local villages to designate 2,000+ acres of land for forest conservation. In exchange, farmers receive training in environmentally friendly agricultural practices, seeds, tools and supplies to improve their livelihood. The organization also supports local female artisans and implements conservation education programs targeting students in local schools.

GOALS

Reducing threats facing cotton-top tamarins, protecting and restoring their forest, creating awareness, and developing sustainable income alternatives to balance wildlife and local communities’ needs.
1

Goal 1: RESEARCH

Conduct a population survey to assess the current status of wild populations of cotton-top tamarins and the impact of our conservation efforts. Continue field research monitoring cotton-top tamarins in the wild, as well as monitoring tree saplings planted through reforestation activities.
2

Goal 2: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Resume community ecotourism activities and provide capacity building training to community members (gastronomy, nature guidance, public speaking, and conflict resolution). Continue support of alternative livelihood programs and marketing of community-made products to support local artisans and farmers.
3

Goal 3: EDUCATION + AWARENESS

Reach 3,000+ new students through conservation education programs that teach students the differences between wild and domestic animals and why cotton-tops should not be kept as pets (TITI KIDS), as well as about the importance of protecting the forests that are home to cotton-tops and wildlife, emphasizing what students can do from their homes and schools to help protect cotton-tops (CARTITILLA).
